Things

Can you find Luke Skywalker?

Can you find Luke Skywalker?

”…things can be art, comfort, tools, toys, and portals to history, stories, science, exploration and possibilities. Be at peace with things, when you can be.” - Sandra Dodd, Just Add Light and Stir

I like things. I like to use them. To see them. To be reminded of the people who gave them to me or made them. Maybe there is a whole story behind an object.

I remember my sister, Dorothy, laughing and trying to hold my wiggly baby with a mold for plaster on his foot. All that kicking and giggling surely would result in a plaster blob. Years later, there on the shelf are his little toes.

Once, I went to a convincing lecture on learning about the whole world from a can of corn.

Pick an object. How about one of the angels on the top shelf of the cupboard? I bought the angels for my mother and grandmother in the 1970s in Italy. At the Vatican. One could study the role of angels in religion or mysticism.

At the time, the currency in Italy was the lira. Now, it is the euro. What would an angel cost today? What is it made from? Where was it made? What type of paint is it colored with? What is the history of paint? The history of color? What musical instrument is the angel playing? From the history of religion to money to art to music and on and on. It all comes together in one object.

The whole world in an angel.
